About the team

The Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team operates from a purpose-built base in Kirkby Stephen. It is a registered charity (no.1107194) and one of eleven members of the Lake District Search and Rescue Association (LDSAMRA). In turn the LDSAMRA teams fall under the governing umbrella of Mountain Rescue England & Wales (MREW).

RAF helicopter rescueThe Kirkby Stephen team is entirely funded by donations. All its members are unpaid volunteers, willing to respond any day of the year in any weather. There are between 20 and 30 callouts a year. The thirty or so full members of the team commit to a rigorous programme of training throughout the year, covering casualty care, off-road and ‘blue-light’ driving, radio communications, search management and swift water rescue.

The pages listed on the left will tell you more about the team and how it operates. There is also information about joining the team or supporting it as a Friend or Sponsor.

The Safe in the Hills website has been set up by the team to help anyone visiting the hills have a safe and enjoyable day out. Most of the principles described on the site will apply whether you are walking in the local Cumbrian hills or anywhere in Britain or indeed the world.

Please support us
If you have found the site useful or would simply like to support our work please consider making a donation to the team. Even the smallest amount makes a difference - it could, for instance, allow us to buy some vital medical supplies or batteries for torches.

You can also donate very easily from your mobile phone. The amount you donate is added to your phone bill and every penny is passed on to the team. Just make your donation by sending the text shown on the left.

If you would like to send us a cheque please download the Gift Aid Declaration (assuming you are a UK taxpayer). This enables us to make your donation go even further. The address for sending the declaration and your cheque is on the form.

Finally you can make your donation very easily online by clicking the Virgin Money Giving button below. You can fill in a Gift Aid declaration online. Virgin make a small charge of 2% plus the card processing fee  (typically around 1.5%) so the vast majority of your donation comes to us. There are no charges on the additional Gift Aid.

Thank you!
